- Minimum overall average of 2.0 on a 4-point scale (C/60% or equivalent).
- If you're applying to Honours-level programs: Minimum overall average of 2.3 on a 4-point scale (C+/65% or equivalent).
- All attempted university courses will be included in the calculation of your cumulative grade point average.
- Courses that are repeated will only count once towards the accumulation of transfer credit.
- You must also meet program-specific requirements since some programs have higher averages or have supplementary procedures for admission.
Eligibility:
York University welcomes applicants who are looking to finish their degree or upgrade from a Bachelors degree to an Honours degree or wish to complete a second degree program.
- Transfer Credit from a Canadian University is usually granted on a case-by-case basis.
- Computer Science, Information Technology, Kinesiology and Bachelor of Commerce courses must be taken within the last 5 years to be considered for major, minor or pre-requisites credit towards a degree program. When courses are taken longer than 5 years ago, the transfer credit may be used only as elective credit.
- Strict regulations set out by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) limit the amount of transfer credit granted for Engineering degree programs. Courses in engineering science and engineering design content must be completed at a degree-granting Canadian Institution accredited by CEAB. The maximum number of credits granted is 30.
- Some programs require a course grade of ‘C’ or higher for the course to apply towards a major/minor or to satisfy a prerequisite.
- The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) courses are recognized towards certification in a number of professional programs, but not all professional accredited courses completed at other post-secondary institutions are eligible for a course credit exclusion towards a major, minor or pre-requisite credits in a degree program. Courses not granted a course credit exclusion may be used as elective credits.
Requirements:
- Completion of a diploma program or at least two full semesters at an accredited college, OR one year of full-time academic studies at an accredited college.
- Minimum overall average of 3.0 on a 4-point scale (B/70% or equivalent).
- All attempted college courses will be included in the calculation of your cumulative grade point average.
- Courses that are repeated will only count once towards the accumulation of block transfer credit.
- You must also meet program-specific requirements since some programs have higher averages or have supplementary procedures for admission.
Eligibility:
Transfer Credit from an Ontario College is usually granted in 1 of 4 ways:
1. Block Credit Policy
Ontario college students who have completed at least one term of a certificate or diploma program may be eligible to receive a group of transfer credit (“block transfers”). As soon as you are offered admission to York, the Office of Admissions assesses your previous postsecondary studies for transfer credit eligibility. This means that before you accept your offer of admission, you may know exactly how much transfer credit you’ll receive. Wait times for transfer assessment completion vary depending on the time of year. The earlier you accept your offer, the earlier you will receive your transfer credit statement. The credit you receive depends on:
- whether the courses you have taken are transferable (academically-equivalent to York courses);
- the number of courses you have completed;
- grades achieves; and
- how your previous postsecondary studies fit with the program you’ve been admitted to at York.
Use the following chart to see how much transfer credit you may receive for previous studies:
COLLEGE PROGRAM/TERMS COMPLETED | POTENTIAL CREDIT FROM YORK | MINIMUM CREDITS REMAINING FOR A YORK PROGRAM | |
---|---|---|---|
FOUR-YEAR DEGREE (120 CREDITS) | THREE-YEAR DEGREE (90 CREDITS) | ||
Three-year advanced diploma/6 or more terms | 42 credits | 78 credits | 48 credits |
5 terms | 36 credits | 84 credits | 54 credits |
Two-year diploma/4 terms | 30 credits | 90 credits | 60 credits |
3 terms | 24 credits | 96 credits | 66 credits |
One-year certificate/2 terms | 15 credits | 105 credits | 75 credits |
One term | 9 credits | 111 credits | 81 credits |
*The number of credits you receive and the number of credits required to complete your degree at York University may not match exactly. Depending on the program you are admitted to, you may be required to complete additional courses to meet specific program requirements.
2. Articulation Agreements
An articulation agreement usually provides a simplified, guaranteed transfer process for transfer students. Agreements between various Canadian colleges and York specify the number of transfer credits and the approximate length of time required for a college student to complete a degree at York, as well as specific college courses and letter that will transfer to the university.
3. Dual Credential Programs
Dual Credential programs allow you to combine a university degree with an Ontario college diploma or certificate program. For example, York’s communication studies program is a dual credential program with Seneca College.
- International Project Management with Humber College
- Urban Sustainability with Seneca College
- Ecosystem Management with Fleming College
4. Collaborative Agreements
A collaborative program is one in which several schools work together to provide comprehensive education programs, with colleges providing the smaller, more hands-on approach and degree-level courses provided by the larger university. At York, we offer a collaborative nursing program in partnership with Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology and Georgian College. View the Collaborative Nursing Program page.
General University Guidelines:
- Computer Science, Information Technology, Kinesiology and Bachelor of Commerce courses must be taken within the last 5 years to be considered for major, minor or pre-requisites credit towards a degree program. When courses are taken longer than 5 years ago, the transfer credit may be used only as elective credit.

Courses not granted a course credit exclusion may be used as elective credits.
If you have completed postsecondary courses elsewhere, you may be eligible to receive credit which will reduce the length of your degree. Most programs at York consist of 120 credits and take four years to complete. Provided the courses you have taken fit your program, you may receive up to a maximum of 90 credits.
The amount of transfer credit you receive depends on whether the courses you have taken are transferable (equivalent to York courses), how many courses you have taken, grades achieved, course content and whether all the courses you have taken fit in the program to which you are applying.
Eligibility:
If you studied in the US or US education system:

Institutionally prepared course outlines or syllabi are required for students who studied outside North America. The outlines should include: detailed list of topics covered, list of textbooks used, grading practices, number of weeks in attendance (excluding examination period), and number of lecture, tutorial and laboratory hours.

- Most 2-unit academic courses with grades of 1, 2 or 3, in examinations qualify for credit. (Cannot combine two 1-unit courses).
- Can be used to fulfil General Education requirements.

Learn MoreTransfer Process
As soon as you are offered admission to York, the Office of Admissions will begin assessing your previous postsecondary studies for transfer credit eligibility. Wait times for transfer assessment completion vary depending on the time of year. The earlier you accept your offer, the earlier you will receive your transfer credit statement. The transfer process is divided into:
Credit Assessment
The Student Recruitment & Admissions Office determines the amount of transfer credit you are eligible to receive based on the following factors:
- The type of institution from which you are transferring: Ontario College, Canadian University, International Institution, Advanced Secondary Institution;
- whether the courses you have taken are transferable (academically equivalent to York courses) or not;
- the number of courses you have completed;
- grades achieved; and
- how your previous post-secondary studies fit with the program you’ve been admitted to at York.
To complete the credit assessment, students must provide Official Transcript(s) either by uploading a copy through MyFile or by having a copy mailed directly to the Student Recruitment & Admissions Office.
Course Assessment
After the credit assessment is complete, the Student Recruitment & Admissions Office thoroughly reviews your previously taken course(s) for content overlap with your existing program's degree requirements. Where they identify significant overlap between courses, these studies are granted course credit exclusion(s) and/or course waiver status.
These identified courses do not need to be retaken at York and they reduce your remaining degree requirements. In order to facilitate course review, students are required to submit course outline(s) for assessment of academic content, rigor and materials covered.
Transfer Credit Statement
This assessment outlines the amount of transfer credit from your prior studies applicable to the academic program at York University to which you have been admitted. All assessments are conditional upon receipt of a final official transcript for each previous post-secondary institution you have attended. If you are in the process of finishing your studies and have not yet been issued a final transcript, you may submit your official final transcript upon completion of your previous studies.
Grades achieved in postsecondary course(s) accepted by York University for transfer credit will not affect your academic average at York. If you repeat course exclusions granted from previous studies, it will result in a reduction of your transfer credit.
Printable transfer credit statements are made available on MyFile in time for enrolment. Current students can access their transfer credit statement via the Office of the Registrar.
Credit Re-Evaluation
You may request a re-evaluation of your transfer credit assessment only if/when new information that was not available at the time of your initial assessment is required. New information may include a detailed course description, updated transcript(s) or a change in your academic program at York University.
Request a Transfer Credit Reassessment
In accordance with Eligibility for Transfer Credit guidelines outlined in the York University Calendar (please select year of admission), you have one academic term from the date of admission or re-admission to York University to submit documentation (including detailed course outlines) for re-evaluation of transfer credit.
How to Prepare Your Documents
The following requirements apply to all applicants applying to undergraduate degree or certificate studies at York University.

Academic Honesty: The Senate Policy on Academic Honesty applies to all applicants. Penalties can range from withdrawal of an offer of admission to expulsion to rescission of a degree.
If you choose to work with an agent or immigration consultant during the process of submitting your application and required documents, you are fully responsible for the accuracy of the content of your application and all related materials.
Important: For final admission, all documents must be official originals and received directly from the home institution. Conditional admission is possible with non-official documents; however, to proceed into courses, you must provide the official original transcripts before the start of classes.
Documents received by York University directly from the granting/issuing institutions become the property of York University and will not be returned.
Acceptable Course Outlines
Course descriptions, syllabi and course outlines must represent the timeframe wherein you took the course. Copies of detailed course outlines/syllabi are the preferred choice. These can be uploaded via MyFile, faxed or mailed directly from your former school.
Here is an example of an acceptable course outline for submission.
For Canadian Institutions Only
The following formats may help if the summary is sufficiently in-depth for content review:
- an undergraduate calendar/catalogue from the university or college you attended;
- a photocopy of the relevant calendar/catalogue pages (it must be clear that the photocopy is from the calendar/catalogue; therefore, include a copy of the cover);
- actual printed pages from your former school's website;
- a faxed copy of any of the above;
