Black Canadian Studies
Liberal Arts & Professional Studies
Certificates allow you to complete a specific group of university courses (for credit) as either part of your degree studies or separately. Additional details on certificates are available here.
The Black Canadian Studies Certificate introduces the study of Black Canada through a multidisciplinary lens that integrates social, cultural, political, and theoretical approaches, to deepen students understanding of race, power and being both locally and globally.
Through coursework and community engagement, the program uniquely explores how Blackness operates as a distinct category in Canada, inviting our students to study the historical foundations and ongoing realities of antiblackness as well as counter-narratives, forms of resistance and empowerment. The certificate situates Black Canadian Studies within comparative and diasporic contexts, fostering a critical understanding of Blackness in the Americas and distinguishes the program as a unique educational offering in Canada and North America.
