Protect Yourself from Fraud

Notice: Fraudulent text messages have been circulating to students with a link to pay their fees or deposits. Please note that York University does not solicit payments or send payment notices via SMS text messaging. Contact Admissions if you suspect fraudulent activity.

Warning about fraudulent offers of admission and scholarships

York University is aware that fraudulent third parties are misrepresenting themselves as agents, staff, or officers of the University and extending fraudulent offers of admission and scholarships to students. We encourage you to protect yourself by understanding how York University does and does not communicate with students:

  • York University will never make unsolicited scholarship offers or admission offers.
  • York University does not offer scholarships or financial aid before receiving an application for admission. Applicants are assessed for scholarships during the official application evaluation process as well as via submissions to the International Student Scholarship Application. We will never offer scholarships or financial aid to anyone who has not applied to the University.
  • York University will never send official documents, including offers of admission or scholarships, through WhatsApp, SMS or any social media platform.
  • Official communications from York University are always sent from @yorku.ca email addresses. York University only accepts applications to undergraduate programs through the Ontario University Application Centre (OUAC) or directly to York University. You will never be asked to pay an application fee to an individual or York University representative. For more information on our application process, visit the How to Apply and the I've Applied web page.
  • If you receive an offer of admission to one of our undergraduate programs, please note the official offer letter will appear in your applicant portal on MyFile, including any required deposits or payments and/or scholarship offers.
  • It is not possible, or legal, for a York University representative to offer you a study permit. Admitted students must apply for a study permit through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), which is a department of Canada’s federal government.
  • York University also does not offer guaranteed admission or university-level courses through high schools of any type.
  • York University would never use automated calling to ask you to confirm details over the phone. If you received an automated phone call, know that this is not York University. If you do receive a phone call, it would be from an actual York U representative, but we will never ask you to accept an offer through the phone or ask for payment. Offers of admissions and scholarships will always be sent to you via email, and will require you to log in to your applicant portal on MyFile.

If you are uncertain about any offer or solicitation, you can always contact our admissions office.

Common signs of malicious and fraudulent communications

Watch out for these common traits of malicious or fraudulent communications:

  • Unexpected prompts to click a link, and/or links with unverified domains. Our links will always have yorku.ca in them.
  • Prompts to enter credentials, download an attachment, or send money.
  • Language that is threatening or suggests great urgency (e.g., “do this or your account will be terminated”).
  • Blocked or unverified phone numbers. York does not solicit payments via text messaging, and official communications are sent to you via email.

If you are unsure whether the communications you've received are authentic, you can always contact our admissions office.
